5 Sure Ways to Not Make It on Medium
Advice from my 2+ years spent on the platform
When I started writing on Medium over 2 years ago, I told myself I would keep at it for 6 months, and see where it would take me. I decided to follow this simple strategy:
- Pick something
- Consider it like a job for 6 months
- Don’t expect anything in return: no money, no publicity, no contacts, no opportunities…
- Just show up and do the work.
Obviously, opportunities will usually come along the way as a result of your work. The beauty of committing to one thing is that it creates a positive synergy for your work. For 6 months, I woke up at 6am every day before going to the office, and I used that time to write an article draft. Within the firsts 6 months of the project, I got in touch with dozens of like-minded authors on Medium, and for the first year, I published at least 3 times a week without fault.
All along the way, I saw some of my favorite writers quit Medium, or some fresh new authors on the platform go viral with one article, grow for a bit, then stop as well.
