Although I left my native country many years ago to settle in beautiful Scandinavia, I’m originally from France. When people here ask me if I miss my country, I always say that I don’t except for the food. But if I’m really honest with myself, there are definitely a few things I miss about France once in a while, and that I’m happy to get back to when I visit my family a few times a year.
Not only do I miss those things, I think they can be of great help to anyone feeling a bit on the low side. If you’re not sure what I mean by that, then read on. Here are 5 french things I think anyone could use a little bit more in life.
1. Joie de vivre
This saying translates literally as “happiness to be alive.” It’s a very old saying dating back to the 18th century when famous French authors like Jules Michelet and Émile Zola made it popular.
I looked up the idiom “Joie de vivre” in a French dictionary and found his definition: “Way of enjoying one’s existence with trust, well-being, and happiness.”
Funnily enough, the French are notorious for complaining a lot. In Europe at least, we’re known as the romantic but grumpy bunch. We complain about trains not being on time, the weather, the news……
